They are obviously streaming WMV, probably using Windows Media Server, but the MPlayer plugin on my machine plays it fine. |

i use VLC -->
http://www.codecs.com/download/VideoLAN.htm cause of this comment --> Quoting:13. ALTERNATIVES TO "CODEC HELL". There are also some applications that have their entire own set of bundled codecs, which means they play most anything out-of-the box.VLC (Videolan Client) is the best known example of such a player. If you are frustrated with codecs, try installing VLC. It should be able to open just about anything you throw at it. An up and coming alternative is mplayer which was originally developed to play media files under Linux and non-windows operating systems. However, it has been ported to Windows, so you can use it in a way similar to VLC. However, it is currently hard to use, so try downloading a GUI frontend: MPUI and MPlayer Frontend (MPF) are two interesting alternatives. At this point mplayer is still for experts only and has discontinued development.]http://www.click-now.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=122[/url... |

mplayer is discontinued?
That's funny considering they released 1.0rc1 a couple weeks ago.....
:) Anyhow, I'll give the obligatory "WMV is evil!" comment. :) I'll have to try out that FF extension. It looks interesting. |

And what possible reason can they have for not using .ogg? It's universal- plays fine on Linux, mac, and windows. This is just another example of extreme retardation in government, possibly with an assist from microshaft. Using closed, proprietary formats for public documents is beyond stupid; IMO it's well into corrupt. |

Quoting:And what possible reason can they have for not using .ogg? It's universal- plays fine on Linux, mac, and windows. Well obviously it's easier to record something, save it as wmv, setup (and pay for?) winders media server to stream it, and hope it doesn't crash than to record it, save as ogg, create an m3u to stream it (you know hard those text files are to create...), upload the files to the server, and tell people that they need to use a real media player to view it. Well, I can kinda understand the real medial player part, since your average winders user probably doesn't know players other than wmp even exist...and since wmp won't play ogg without hunting down a codec.... Of course, they could just link to a codec and/or some proper media players for those who realize wmp won't play it.... |
