This is why SJVN is interesting to me.

This is a good and thoughtful piece by a Linux person who wants to see a lot more Linux in the world.

Agreed. It's a good article, and an example of why SJVN is a good journalist.

Haters? Where? Disagreeing with some of the things he says is not hatred.

Yes it is a good article and nothing new, but the title could have been much better. Instead of "Windows wins and Linux Loses", he could have said " How Linux can win over Windows" or "How Linux can surpass Windows.

Abe - I agree. Don't know if he make his own headlines or not, but he might enjoy being a little provocative. The name of the game is to get hits, after all.

It is a pretty sound article. The common wisdom is something like "we just need to keep making Linux cooler and more better, and people will adopt it on the basis of its superior merits." If mere technical superiority were all it took, windows never would have been more than a dusty historical footnote.

SJVN seems to be getting a lot more careful about what and how he writes. Why do I get the feeling that he may be monitoring LXer ;-)...

Does he really need to? As a Linux advocate (or claim to be), he should have know we will be more appreciated if he doesn't resort to such tactics.
Quoting:windows never would have been more than a dusty historical footnote.
With Linux advancing they way it has been, I say there is still time for that.

I have the feeling that he is not the only one. LXer has a whole bunch of hyperactive poster bees (in a good way) who never let any article get by without making their views know.

Heh... Maybe we aren't talking to hear the sound of out own voices after all :D

If I could only get the voices in my head to shut up. They keep whispering evil things to me.

"Bill Gates is your friend" "Microsoft is the OS of choice"

hmm, How do I check to see if my X server is corrupted and is feeding me subliminal messages?

Hey, I like *my* voices in my head! They're singing "Perpetual Black Second" by Meshuggah right now - what's not to like? ;)

Login into an Ubuntu box and type: $ man sux Observe.

I cannot leave the "Ubuntu sux" folks disappointed with no retort so here it is.

Ubuntu ruleZ!

BTW. I use it and like it but don't think it's greatest thing since sliced bread.

I agree dek. Sliced bread is hard to beat. Especially if it's hot AND there's butter and your favorite spread. ;-)

BTW, I just discovered that SJVN is a not-too-distant neighbor. I've already suggested we get together some time. He's game, so well see how it turns out.

Doesn't Nick Petreley live somewhere in NC? He may be close enough to arrange a get together also.

I've never met SJVN, but Nick's a pretty decent fellow. It can only do you well to hook up with those guys and bend an elbow or two.

But...One very strong suggestion...A warning perhaps...

To get the tone right, you must say it in the same manner as Pete warned Delmar and Ulysses from the back of the theater --- you remember the exchange? Delmar stage-whispers to Pete, "We thought you was a toad!" Pete stage whispers back, "Do not seek the treasure."

With that scene firmly in mind, please take this advice/warning in the spirit it is offered:

Do not take the pig!

Yeah, I'll second that thought. I know the pig will be disappointed, but just tell him that pigs may have knuckles, but no elbows to rub :D

DC..

I live close to you as well...I used to live in Goldsboro, NC just south of Raleigh when I was in the Air Force...but now that I'm out, I've moved to Richmond, VA. However, I do have relatives in Snow Hill, NC which means I visit quite a bit. I'll see what I can do to get around there if you guys plan another get together.

BTW, Wilburs BBQ in Goldsboro is world famous...3 presidents of the past 4 have been there. It's totally worth it :D

O Brother, Where art thou?

Rev - If you haven't seen the film, then shame on you.

It is a resetting (more or less) of the Odyssey into depression-era Mississippi.

Any movie with the lines "We thought you was a toad" and "I am the paterfamilias" already has something going for it, but throw in George Clooney, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, and Charles Durning and, ... wait! That's not all!

If you buy now, you get sound-track of early twentieth-century and traditional music that will knock your socks off - so good it won the Album of the Year Grammy.

Seriously, this is one a good southern reverend marine geek needs to see.

Aha! Yes, I just needed my memory registers flushed. ;-) I saw that movie some time ago, and have forgotten a good bit of it. That was hilarious!
