Its no matter if people like it or not. Everyone hated Dos when it did come out it was aweful but people used it anyway. Now is EU about to make Linux a defacto standard. So it don't matter if you like it or not. Linux is about to be used all over Europe. Sure it goes slow but things is moving faster and faster in germany and in france. One big breakthrought and it might explode in userbase. |

> Everyone hated Dos when it did come out it was aweful but people used it anyway. Not a very apt comparison. Apple II had some traction, but the Apple III fiasco sapped Apple II development. C/PM computers were 8-bits. The TRS-DOS machines did all right, but TRS-DOS was not exactly anybody's idea of friendly and powerful. DOS ran on the IBM PC, which was backed by IBM. At that time, penetration of personal computers was very small. With IBM's entry, the market exploded. People bought IBM PC's and used the OS that came on them. DOS flourished because it was there. Today's world is a very different place. People do have alternatives. That's a good thing, if you're a linux user, but it means that there will be no overnight sea change. |

dino, The real explosion came after the BIOS reverse engineering case was one and the cheap clones started shipping from Taiwan. Once the hardware started becoming a commodity, the 'IBM' PC started to become the dominant market player. This is what scares MS now. Linux is a commodity |

6x - You are right...The first explosion was massive in terms of anybody's expectations. Nobody thought they could sell so many computers. IBM certainly didn't. But it paled when Compaq sent in the clowns, er, clones. Those, of course, also ran DOS. |
