It's heartening to read that the percentage of women attending a Linux conference is increasing. Good on Linux-Chix for putting on a mini-conference event and including relevant talks for women -- "Closing the Gender Pay Gap One Salary at a Time", "Is Free Software a Macho thing? Women and FOSS", and "Social networking for fun and profit". I particularly relate to the pay issue because during my working career pay equity for librarians in public libraries (where women dominate the workforce) was a issue. Barbara |

Yes, Mary Gardiner and Jacinta Richardson put in a lot of time and energy encouraging Linuxchixors to submit proposals for papers, talks, and to just plain attend. Valorie Henson is always bugging us to do the same whenever any conference anywhere is announced. There was a bit of furor over Adam Kennedy's lightning talk- like a complete idiot he chose the CPAN module ACME::PLAYMATE as the topic- originally the module was designed to maintain a database of the measurements of models, both women and men. He used a slide of a topless woman during the talk. Naturally he was sorry later, when he got yelled at a lot for doing such a stupid thing. Sorry for getting yelled at, that is. All cool people are invited to visit linuxchix.org. Lots of good mail lists to choose from, volunteer opportunities, and just hanging out with a diverse crowd of fun geeks. It's one of the most civilized tech communities you'll find, with hardly a troll or grinch in the lot. (I'm the official grinch.) |
