What does this mean?
"In the End, It's All KDE. When all is said and done, I find myself more drawn to considering Simply Mepis versus Kubuntu. Even as an Ubuntu user, the fact that Simply Mepis has opted to not rely on a standard KDE UI install means something to me. It shows me, the user, that they are serious about offering me the best desktop experience possible, not just another KDE wrapper on another distribution." Here's a few questions that weren't answered. 1. If Simply Mepis doesn't rely on a standard KDE UI, what do they rely on? 2. What is your definition of a quality desktop experience? 3. What is lacking in Kubuntu's desktop? 4. How much effort would it take a user to get the quality desktop experience you seek with Kubuntu? 5. How much effort would it take Kubuntu to fix their desktop to your liking? Without facts, this becomes a religious argument, and we have more than enough of those. Dave |

Where do you get that quote? It's not from the story. As far as Kubuntu goes, you have a choice of either the Kubuntu-ized KDE, or the stock KDE. Easy peasey, just install or remove 'kubuntu-default-settings'. As far as the article itself goes, he makes some decent points. But this one has me scratching my head: "Unfortunately, even to this day, I still see so many instances of forum posts where a recent "switcher" makes a plea for assistance, only to receive some short posting with a URL to another thread in it. You know something - that was one of my biggest pet peeves when I first tried Red Hat a number of years ago. And from what I’ve seen, it's still happening often enough even to this day. What's wrong with that? A direct link to a solution isn't good enough? Must there be hugs and kisses too? While it take can a bit of time to navigate some forum threads, it's usually the best response because typically they will cover a number of different scenarios. |

Tuxchicks: I have never, ever seen a newbie being ungratefull for a "follow this link" reply - if the thread/article linked is good. The only think I occasionally see is a complaint that the article linked doesn't help the user or is too complicated. |

> What's wrong with that? A direct link to a solution isn't good enough? Must there be hugs and kisses too? Well, I've always tried to summarize what the link says in addition to providing the link. I also try to explain how I found the link (usually with the comment "Google is your friend"). That seems to work better for newbies than just giving the link. |
