Sorry Matt, you fail to grok reality here, big time. It's true that many Free Software projects are run by volunteers. The community factor has always been a big factor for almost every Free Software project. Community? Yes. Passion? No. Passion for what? Compassion for whom? Are Free Software hackers like Wizards sitting in their ivory towers trying to work out spells and potions for the betterment of the world, not interesting in anything else? Bah, what an old-fashioned stereotype that is. No, most Free Software projects start out in order to create a particular solution to a particular problem. Passion has little to do with it. Did RedHat start packaging and distributing and contributing to GNU/Linux out of passion? Did Mozilla develop Firefox out of pure passion? No way, they do that because they want money, kohle, backschisch. Marketing might make you believe all that counts is passion. As a journalist, you'd know better, wouldn't you, Matt? |

Well, their 'passion' is for different things. :-p You're quite correct, though. It's not entirely altruistic. |
