The technology is our only legitimate concern

Yes, what happened to Nina Reiser, what Hans Reiser faces, and the well-being of their children are all vital concerns. However, unless you actually know the people involved, it is a hypocritical excuse to enjoy gossip to pretend you have more than an abstract concern. What's happening is tragic, but it's none of our business. That's why I mentioned no more of it than was necessary for context. By contrast, what happens to Namesys and Reiser4 may seem trivial, but it is the only legitimate concern for the free and open source software communities. Regardless of the outcome of the human tragedies, people do want to know about the effect on the technologies. What happens to the technology is news for the community. By contrast, to write about the case, especially when so little is known to the public, would be taking the low road -- especially since I would be stirring up controversy in a community that is important to at least some of those caught up in the events. I make no apology whatsoever for the article. In the circumstances, it was the right approach to a difficult subject. - Bruce Byfield (nanday) |

I agree Bruce, it's legitimate news. |

Chill, Bruce, we be cool. Yes, your article was quite good and pertinent, as they usually are. I think you can understand why some folks think it's tacky or insensitive to wonder 'but what about ReiserFS' under the circumstances, and I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss their concern as anything but genuine. It will all sort itself out, as these things always do. |

Quoting:unless you actually know the people involved, it is a hypocritical excuse to enjoy gossip to pretend you have more than an abstract concern That statement is not only dead-on in this case, it illustrates perfectly one of the main problems in the world today. News is supposed to be about separating the wheat from the chaff and, although it may sound very cold hearted, the murder of another person is just chaff for most people. It would be great if people really were concerned about a story like this but they're not. They weren't concerned about Nicole Simpson. They weren't concerned about Sharon Tate. They weren't concerned about The Clutter Family. They just want the gory details. Take out the gory details in this case and what do you have left? The continuation of a valuable piece of work. |
