Mom's gone, dad's in jail. Kids have been sent into the bureaucratic abuse system, who cares about a mere company and a redundant file system?

No kidding. Sadder than everything else, save the alleged murder.

Sorry guys, but I for one found this one informative and timely, even though it's against a very sad backdrop. Some of us actually use the filesystem, and it's a good one. Personalities, and personal tragedies aside, it would be a bad thing for Reiser's work to go down the tubes. Almost literally dumping the baby with the bathwater.

I think this is twice in one week..I agree with you Jim. ;-)

It is a terrible situation for all, Wives do not deserve to be killed by their Husbands and Children should not go without their Parents but...The work that has been done is good all on its own and it does not deserve to be thrown away because of this.

I am in no way trying to make light of this, My Mother was almost killed by my step-father many years ago. I do not wish that upon any family, ever. My sister and I are lucky that she lived. If he is innocent then I am sorry for his loss but if he did it, he should fry. Any Man that beats, rapes or kills Women should be turned into fertilizer, period. No passing go, no collecting $200, no appeals, no stays of mercy. Just gone for good.

Wagner was a notorious anti-semite, but lots of people love his music. OJ could throw a ball pretty damn good but he just happens to be a double murderer, but that's not going to stop me from watching Naked Gun. Bing Crosby beat his kids mercilessly, but I still love his recording of White Christmas and play it every year.

I think we can separate the wheat from the chaff. Despite this tragedy, I don't think that it's necessary for his technological advancements in file systems go to jail along with him.

And, of course, he's innocent until proven guilty. I don't think Hans has even been charged yet. He's just been detained as a suspect.

How would Namesys closing its doors help the Reiser kids?

Eh? OJ was a running back, not a quarterback.

Hmm, honor the psychopathic asshat for his or her beneficial deeds? Bill Gates gives to charity, like all robber barons when they get old and start thinking about their places in history. After long fun careers of rampaging all over everyone and leaving gigantic swaths of destruction and pillage, they want to be loved. Oh wait, he didn't do any work worth honoring in the first place. Never mind.

Watch what he gives, and, who he gives it to. There is usually an ulterior motive.

Always my friend, always.

Rich people do not give to other rich people if it does not benefit them.

People like Buffett always give to Gates = Always.

They both have enough money to actually make a difference..but why do that when you can get other rich people to worship you.

Hear! Hear! Although I have serious qualms with the death penalty, I understand its purpose, and generally don't interfere with its use.

Could not argue for a moment, and for reasons that you might find familiar.

It is one of those areas in which I have to pray for forgiveness because my heart is cold and hard to such folk. In this area, I am too week to walk the walk of my faith.

That said, let us remember a couple of things:

1. Passion, stress, etc, do things to people. Doesn't excuse their actions, doesn't mean they shouldn't be punished, etc. Might be the basis for just a smidge of "There but for the grace of God go I" type compassion.

2. Allegations and suspicions and arrests are not the same thing as proof, knowledge and convictions. Until there is no room for doubt, we should offer the benefit of the doubt.

I'm sorry if anyone thought I was nay-saying the Reiser file system or the Namesys company. The Reiser file system is GPL, so it will live on so long as there are interested people. Namesys is more than one man, so it too will continue as long as there are interested people.

I, myself, am fascinated by the Reiser system after seeing a talk on it from a Debian gathering. My choice to use it or not depends not a wit on why Mrs. Reiser has vanished.

That all said, the one and only thing that matters is life because everything else has an alternative.

The kids are my primary concern, not that it is any of my concern, because they are the ones who can truly be harmed _now_.

The death penalty is most appropriate when it is the result of self defense. Once the deed is done, what's the point of another death? But I say that without knowing the case in question, which tends to be left out of capital punishment discussions.

Murray Rothbard built an excellent logical "legal" structure based upon restitution, but even he had to stop at murder because, simply put, how does one pay restitution for a life? But it's not like there isn't already the precedence of Danegeld.

Being an anarchist, I prefer cooperation to legislation in everything, even this.

Also wondering here about death penalty (but I'm from Europe): What good would it bring to the children if their mom is killed by their dad, and their dad is killed by the state? Is the death of their mother not enough?

Speaking about the poor children...

BTW I was thinking about the same Bob, in this situation why do we only talk about a filesystem? I guess it is since we do not know the people who are concerned personally, but personally (can't help it), I am concerned by ReiserFS, since that's what IS in my proximity on a very daily basis. Nonetheless my mind goes out to the children, and I hope justice will be done (and I hope their father won't be killed also, I think it won't do any good if both your parents are killed).

The death penalty isn't automatically pursued for every murder case. Without the body of Mrs. Reiser, it is unlikely that prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Mr. Reiser, even if he is convicted. I'm against the death penalty, but I don't know if it's any better for his children if Mr. Reiser lives. I guess what I mean is that the point is kind of moot; who wants to go to prison to see the man who killed their mother, especially if it happens to be their father?
