Microsoft customers should be grateful for the company's attitude.

After all, it's the kind of attitude that can push customers into the arm of other software --- like Linux.

In other words, Microsoft is doing them the biggest favor it can do.

For as long as I can remember Microsoft as a major player '80s-ish, has had an attitude, an attitude born out of its monopoly mindset. Such an attitude today however, does not have the same weight as it did once years ago, Microsoft has always had the wheel in control, but today is lost for direction, and it's attitude today is more a panic then one of control.

The author is just now noticing this? This is the same one who wrote about the awful perils of mixed computing environments in the sacred corporate world.

Versus the outright lies they've often told in the past, I'd say this is an improvement.

No, you're not. But try buying a PC from a major vendor without it and see how far you get.

Debatable. If it's more secure than Windows XP (OK, you can stop laughing now), then they are doing Windows users a favor. And the costs of upgrading will undoubtably make some people take a look at the alternatives, which is also a favor. Only if it's worse than XP, or more of the same (the most likely) are they not doing Windows users a favor.

Oh, I think Microsoft has a fair handle on the scope of the attacks on their OS'es by this time. Now, what to do about it, that's a different matter.
