Sense has nothing to do with it.

Well originally, it was set up to honor working people by giving them an extra day off, but, Corporate America, and, our wonderful 'service economy' has pretty much made a farce out of it.

Yep, people will always find a way around the things they don't actually want.

Anyone who actually does work has to on labor day. They can't afford to take it off.

Scott, I think you'll find the reverse. No _business_ like food stores and pharmacies can afford to take the day off. As a result, they pay those who wish to work that day quite a bit more than they otherwise would.

Every time I've been working in an environment open on Labor Day, I've specifically asked to work that day because I prefer the money rather than the day off. Am I wrong?

Yes and No, I had to work today but it was up for debate whether or not I had been there long enough to get time and a half. Businesses have all kinds of ways of making sure that you don't get what you should get for working holidays.

I worked in a restaurant years ago and they would pay you the actual minimum wage on holidays but then the taxes went up as well, so I always had to pay extra out of my tips to cover the taxes that my "full" wage incurred while working a holiday. I actually lost money because of it.

How about just getting the day off? That would be nice.

"making sure that you don't get what you should get"

Ah! I see the basis for our disagreement.

"Should" is a subjective, relative term.

"How about just getting the day off? That would be nice."

Go right ahead. Just don't expect to get paid for not working.
