Those vacations are harder to take when you figure out how much they're costing:

Cost of vacation PLUS cost of foregone income.

Ain't no vacation benefits outside of employee land.

That depends on how you set up your own company. If you keep your company's financials separate from your own (under Dutch law called a BV or an NV - I don't know the relevant UK/US versions) then you can simply put yourself on the payroll of your own company and have a paid vacation like anyone else. Ofcourse, the company pays more taxes this way and it still affects the bottom line of your company....

I think we in the US would refer to it as a corporation vs a "sole proprietorship". In the former, the owner is (or can be) an employee of the company, iirc. Sole proprietors have it a little rougher.
