Live CDs?

Isn't this what live CDs excel at? Oh, sure, one must reboot to do it, but you're certain not to have any open files, etc. Any system for which a reboot is too much down-time shouldn't be risking "migrating" the file system either. |

Ya know, this article makes it too difficult and risky. The best way is to use EVMS (enterprise volume management system.) EVMS incorporates good ole LVM, RAID, and other filesystem utilities. You can easily add it to existing systems. EVMS safely makes snapshots of live filesystems, which you can then back up, do rollbacks, or copy to another location. It supports most filesystems. This gives you a single tool for all backups, including databases, so you don't have to juggle database-specific utilities with your other backup tools. Trying to copy and move a live filesystem using cp and tar is asking for trouble, IMO. http://evms.sourceforge.net/ |
