...mostly by lasting long enough that when some clown arranges to paste my head hard into his car door, most of my clients never know about it.

If I was supporting 'Doze, the part about being off-air for a few months afterwards would be kind of fatal to business across the board, as well as being the physical risk that it did turn out to be. 'Doze takes such constant hand-holding that essentially zero customer sites would last untouched for months, but with Linux in, I can leave many sites untouched for several years at a time.

You don't see much about that in funded cost-of-ownership "studies", but it's a big factor. Say it costs me about AUD$1000 to build and install a Linux server, including hardware; the same system running 'Doze would require several thousand just for the hardware, plus at least hundreds for the software (add SQL and/or email, watch that skyrocket), plus constant, unsatisfying maintenance.

I also put OpenOffice on the 'Doze workstations, and so simply avoid software audits plus much panicking about macro-viruses and applications going bonkers for "no reason". Open Source is generally built to work, not just to look fancy or milk licence fees, and functionality is what users actually need.
