Not sure abouit the MySQL thing in particular, however, IBM, like Sun, is strictly using Linux to foster their own OS.. in this case AIX. I'd be pretty careful when dealing with IBM. They speak with forked tongue. |

IBM is completely self-promoting, though the Developerworks articles are usually high-quality and useful DB2 might be the awesomest database in the known universe, but as usual they misuse the term "free": "Easy to use, powerful and free! That's how MySQL and PostgreSQL are often described. But did you know that DB2 has a version (Express-C) with the same qualities and more? " They do not state license terms, but near the end it says: "Frequently asked questions Question: How do I get the source code of this tool? Answer: First of all, we would like to know about the bugs / issues. We do not mind sharing the code with you if you promise to share with us the enhancements that you make. Please send a note to one of the authors if you would like to have the source." I'm losing patience with folks who do this. I don't think they can legitimately claim ignorance any more. |

For certain they are not providing performance comparisons among the 3 databases. I cannot find any advantage to migrate a PostgreSQL server not bound to any limitation to DB2 Express-C, which is limited to 2 processors. If you want more, you have to pay.
Even then, they forget things like PostgreSQL supporting procedures (functions) in SQL, C, C++, pgplsql, Perl, Python, Java; triggers use functions, so you can use any of these languages. I fail to see any advantage. If any, IBM is letting people know about DB2 Express-C, not really thinking they can migrate someone from PostgreSQL to DB2 without any real advantage. MySQL, for sure cannot compete with DB2, but PostgreSQL... EDIT: typo |

As I've said before, GPL it or don't, but don't try to feed us this bull shit line. Some of my more knowledgeable friends say that the Corporate world understands and appreciate the advantages of FOSS and the GPL. That may be true, but profit is still their priority and few corporations appear to care about much else. So, Deceit, lies, and dirty tricks necessary to maintain control and make a buck are the order of the day. In the end, Sun and IBM are not all that much different than our dear friend Microsoft. |

Notice that many IBM contributions improve Linux in exactly those areas where AIX is or was better.
