An LXer reader commented on the forums about the video formats at OSVids. So yesterday I e-mailed Jonathon about using Ogg-Theora, and today he has converted the videos to Ogg-Theora. Thanks Jonathon!

Additionally, using Ogg-Theora videos accomplishes two things:

(1) Allows us to view cool video without tweaking our consciences (for the conscientious objectors out there)

(2) Shows off the capabilities of Ogg, a Free multimedia format

(3) Saves the webmaster bandwidth

Who said I could count?

And the 2nd thing it does is show off how accommodating and downright friendly some folks are.

(I can't count, either).

You're right, Grouch. I have to say, I have actually seen pretty decent responsiveness in a number of FOSS projects. This is just one superior example. :-) And Jonathon has been very friendly. Actually, I might even have been a little snide in my initial request...

..Goes to dig through e-mails.

My first encounter with these strangely accessible free software people was shortly after I managed to get Slackware 3.31 connected. I was using dosemu for some old software and ran into a problem. I posted a question on some mailing list and a day later received an answer. It was much later before I realized I had been answered by Hans Lermen, who was the maintainer of dosemu then.

All I can say is, I've n-e-v-e-r had this kind of responsiveness from a non-free software provider. Hmmm...

Got to agree about this. I have been a lyx user (latex frontend) for some years and the developers are always there to help users on the mailing list in a friendly manner. Builds community....

I have found the same thing.

I think that's why it really hacks me off when I see rtfm flamage. It's usually not from a project developer or real contributor, just some self-style haxxor.

Most FOSS folk are very friendly and very helpful.

To be fair, lots of people in the proprietary world are equally friendly and helpful, but companies tend to put roadblocks in the way of ever reaching the ones who can actually help you out.
