In my experience, especially since coming to Europe, I am finding considerable truth in Mr. Quinn's statements, none of which can be taken inflammatory at all. As we experience each and every day, well dressed politicians and business leaders lie to us continually, so in reality, being well dressed does not lend any real credence to what a person says. However, that does not change the fact that people tend to perceive well-dressed people as being more reliable and trustworthy. The Open Source community needs to progress beyond the dress code issue, determine what it takes to be perceived to be trustworthy, and on that basis engage in discussion with potential users of the software to win more support. What is the real issue here? Promoting a lifestyle choice or contributing to providing humanity with a real, vendor-independent solution to software its needs? Denigrating Mr. Quinn on the basis of these statements, as done by the LXer editor, is unjustified and not deserved by someone who has more than stuck out his neck to promote open standards. |
