Debian package management works

They have 15000+ packages for many architectures. I need only a few thousand to make a very complex system with tons of services and apps for the desktop. The repository is distributed in that there are many developers, groups and package maintainers around the world. The release is a bit of a bottleneck but the delays in releasing sarge were mostly due to bug hunting. The realease-critical bug count was way below 100 when sarge was let go. How can anyone criticize that kind of reliability? I expect the packaging system in Debian and others will improve as a result of the influence of the more scheduled Ubuntu distro. The world is huge and richly populated with humans with diverse ideas. There is plenty of room in the GNU/Linux tent to hold all. What is holding back adoption by big players is ignorance of the benefits, not any inherent difficulty with GNU/Linux. Dell can pick a distro, pick several, or sell blank machines. All would be good strategies in terms of supplying a market. If Dell believes that market is too small to explore, smaller outfits will and they will grow in the niche. Eventually, Dell, Microsoft and Intel will be left with that segment of the market that does not value choice, freedom, value per dollar, reliability and performance. The rest of us will prosper in the sunshine. |

I agree. Every once in a while someone who doesn't understand the purpose of the rigorous Debian system of testing, and of how the repos work, comes out and purposes 'his vision' of how the world 'should' work. Debian doesn't work that way, nor do any of the Debian derivatives. Broken?... I think not. Try Debian stable if you want reliability and consistency. This article is just more FUD. |
