I've been discussing this topic with some folks both inside and outside of Sleepycat, and the general concensus seems to be that the embedded database we know and love isn't going anywhere. I personally have a lot at stake here, as a heavy user of Berkeley DB in an open source application. A Sleepycat VP sent me an email this morning to reassure that the commitment to open source is absolutely going to continue, and that we should feel secure continuing to use it. And if that turns out not to be the case? Then the open source community forks the most recent version, and moves along. There's no need to panic. |

Thanks for the reassuring words. I also promise never to lie again, drink coke, the mercedes is paid for, the check is in the mail and other such sayings seem to apply. You should have heard what the Sun's folks used to say about their JDS desktop. I'm also not sure a fork will solve the problem. Meanwhile, I salute your optimism and really pray that it all turns out OK. |
