While it's always good to have something to counter-balance Microsoft's TCO studies, why is that people persist in believing that a single truth about TCO exists? Business, like life, is complicated: different situations need different solutions. For some, it is quite possible that Windows is a "better" solution; for others, open source certainly will be. The differing results of TCO studies reflect that. The trouble is, even when such studies are positive for open source, they validate the approach, and lend weight to Microsoft's own results. Far better, surely, to say to companies, Yes, Windows may be better for you, but until you examine seriously the alternative, you'll never find out. Look at both and make your own mind up - don't depend on meaningless TCO studies from either side. |
