That's the real absurdity here. It's not the people who copy and then sell movies, thus "depriving the studios of their justly deserved profits", that are being punished. Doing that has always been illegal.

These new laws are just making more and more "incidental" criminals. Ayn Rand pointed out that the State has no power to punish people who have committed no crimes, so it's in the State's favor to make as many people into criminals as possible.
