These little critters have all kinds of uses, and they're a lot of fun to hack on. I've been dinking around with a Mini-ITX box and Debian, trying to build a email/web surf/balance checkbook machine that boots up in under 30 seconds. Creating a simplified user interface is easy, it's just a tweaked IceWM. But getting the boot time down is more difficult. I think something like this would find a nice little market niche, because I hear from a lot of users who want something they can fire up quickly and do a couple of tasks, then shut it down and go do something else. They don't want to dink around with long boots and elaborate shutdown sequences. |
