There's also motivation from the other direction: being seen as a patent "heavy" could work against IBM's public image -- particularly amongst that loose non-federation known as "the Open Source community" or even more so that non-state within the stateless known as "the Free Software community". |

I doubt that IBM cares about being seen as a patent "heavy". Everybody knows they have a huge patent portfolio -- including lots and lots of hardware patents. If you've got legitimate patents, defending them doesn't make you a heavy. More likely than not, they've done the cost-benefit analysis and decided not to bother. |
