Quoting:'Google Desktop Search' ... Unfortunately, Google seems to have forgotten their Linux heritage Despite having an overall favorable view of Google, there are some privacy issues associated with various Google tools, utilities and web applications that should cause one to pause before accepting gifts too hastily. Regarding a desktop search tool, personally, I would more likely use one from an independent source. See for example, in the Oct. issue of Linux Journal Marcel Gagne's column reviewing search tools (where he ranks Beagle - as interesting but in the alpha stage). [I for one do not consider the term alpha stage disparaging - I am reading and writing this note using Firefox Deer Park Alpha 2.] Note too, that despite Firefox's (and Mozilla before that) had Linux/Unix users as its natural constituency (early adopters) more attention has been paid to making it easy for Windows users to install, test and update than for Linux/Unix users. Moreover, it was even difficult to find the source to do a standard: configure; make; install on the latter. This was initially irritating, but fairly recently I was looking at the browser statistics on a non-computer centric site that had a high percentage of Firefox users. To my surprise Linux/Unix OS usage was no more than 2%, hence, the path chosen by both Google and Mozilla has its advantages. |
