What about live CDs?

I think the biggest oversight in this article was failing to suggest the live CDs available for new users to *easily* try out Linux and check out their hardware. And what about the advice to avoid "hard-to-handle distributions like Debian, Slackware, and Gentoo, among others"? What about Kanotix, Ubuntu and Mepis..... all Debian based, as is his recommended Linspire? With Kanotix and Mepis you can install from the live CD and be up and running in no time. I never tried Fedora Core, but I don't think it has a reputation for being the most newbie friendly distro. Another thing: why would anyone need "10GB or so for your root partition"? 3 or 4 GB should be more than enough for any beginning user. |
