This article is nothing more than an advertisement for LinSpire and Xandros. I despise article like that.

"Home users are going to demand easier program installation, something along the lines of Linspire's Click-N-Run but for other distributions as well"

Does this guy know about Synaptic and Yast? I am sure he does, but he has to say that to lift LinSpire up above all others.

"An equally important issue is the increased availability of pre-installed Linux systems"

Here are couple links for the guy to add in his article for people who read it will find a Linux pre-installed computers http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF04a/12454-64287-89... http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/us/en/sm/WF04a/12454-64287-89...

"It can be made clear, even to a computer novice, that if you are simply using your computer for word processing, emailing, and Internet surfing (etc.) any operating system will do."

When they get a computer with Linux, they don't only get "word processing, emailing, and Internet surfing", they also get OpenOffice, Gimp, InkScape, some games, multimedia tools, Photo-albums, CD/DVD burning and much more for no additional cost which they have to pay if get a Windows based computer. And don't forget what they DON'T get, like virus, worms, intrusions, and crashes.

"The trouble here is again hardware compatibility as notebooks can be very hard to install Linux onto."

Where has this guy been? That was sometime ago. there is even notebooks that come pre-installed with Linux already. Here is a link:

"While phone support is very costly to provide, it may be necessary for commercial distributions to have this in addition to on-line options. Support is an area where most varieties of desktop Linux have done very well, but improvements can always be made, including features like instructional on-line videos, an included phone-support period, and better email support response times. Even features like an easy to use included manual and a well-maintained FAQs page can make a major difference to new users."

This is really baloney. Pay for the distribution, you get 3 month of phone support from Suse, 1 year un-limitted on-line support from Mandriva. I am sure if you are willing to pay for better phone support, you will find it. The question is, what kind of support would a user get from MS? A $150/call to tell you to reboot/reinstall by the end after wasting an hour of your time?

It is getting disgusting. Article repeating the same old things from two years ago.

Yes this reads like a plug for Linspire but I do not think it was dishonest. I checked out the web site and the author Sal Cangeloso did write a review of Linspire on the 28'th of July. I think a combination of his recent review of Linspire and "lifting" some of the text from same article resulted in the somewhat one sided article.

The site in general seems to be ok.

bstadil:

I don't think I said he was being dishonest, my issue is, he is advocating Linspire distro on the expense of the others and downgrading GNU/Linux (to satisfy RMS) compared to Windows in the process. He is not the only one, other journalists are doing the same driven by who pays more. If he wants to compare Linspire against Windows, that is fine but he should stick with that. But to inaccurately knock off other Linux distros for the benefit of Linspire! That doesn't go down well with me.

The competition among the Linux distros is already very fierce. To give, or to let MS take advantage of it is a mistake. Such analysis or comparisons should be corrected and made clear even if it was unintentional.
