According to Sun, the new version is actually delayed as they pursue what it will take to release it under a more open license.

The new product is to be called ReallyOpenStarOffice 8 and will contain a new data format called IYF (In Your Face) designed specifically to displace Linux in the corporate workplace. The new product will be written in ReallyOpenJava 10, which is similar to Java, but really open. What makes it "really open" is strict adherence to the plethora of open standards that made Sun what it is today. Sun emphasizes that the license will not be the anti-corporate, anti-American license that so often is used with "open" source.

Sun is hoping that with ReallyOpenStarOffice 8 and its counterpart, MegaOpen Office 2006 (due in January) from Microsoft will give the data center an excuse to finally boot Linux out. Microsoft is busily working on recoding the XML format in ReallyOpenStarOffice to a high speed binary data object that includes encryption and data signing via industry standards such as Passport and Liberty Alliance's federated methodologies. MOO (MegaOpen Office) 2006 will be packaged with Dude, an interactive helper that uses sophisticated artificial intelligence to help guide you through complex document creation.

This new strategy so radical, that together Microsoft and Sun have formed the MOO Consortium http://www.andrewdavidson.com/gibberish/?companyname=MOO Con...

One version of Dude (there will be variants if you get the MOO Plus add on) features the Java Duke icon. According to Microsoft and Sun, people just can't get enough of the Java mascot... it simply makes people feel better about the quality of the product. "Dude, will make other productivity packages look arcane."

Soon after MOO 2006 is released, Microsoft will deliver Java Vista (due in March), the successor to the industry dominant Windows XP OS. The Java Vista platform will contain a deeper integration of the industry standard products C# and .Net. When asked if the platform would run Java, they replied, "It's got MOO Dude."

Just a bit of levity to bring "Sun" shine to your day.

Isn't that just ecstasy diluted enough so we old-timers keel over?
