tuxxy: yeah, I've never booted JDS -- but from the article it sounds like they did some sort of integration hat-trick with other software -- must have been some fancy footwork not to violate licensing when they published their desktop...

The worst news in the article is here though:
Quoting:By the end of 2003, however, Sun had discontinued selling the Cobalt line of products.

I knew people that were completely ignorant of Linux (didn't even know it existed) that had purchased and used Cobalt products. The fact that Sun botched the opportunity speaks volumes.

Actually the new version of JDS is based on SUSE SLES9. The first one was based on SLES8 (well specifically the SUSE Desktop 1.0).

Sun had a great deal of trouble understanding SLES9 because they sort of live in a closed world where if it's not Solaris, they don't try to learn anything (very closed minded folks there). The SLES8/Desktop 1.0 based version when fairly smoothly because SUSE had done most of the work... after the Novell acquisition, Sun didn't have rights on the "Novell Desktop", so they could only get SLES9 (a server based dist) to use. They didn't realize the amount of work that went into turning SLES into a desktop distribution.... and so the latest edition had a TON of problems in beta (really bad problems). It was becoming more and more obvious that Sun was strictly trying to perfect their Gnome environment for Solaris.... and thus it has become time to break the SUSE/Novell (Novell not being best friends with Sun.. a Microsoft partner).
