Helios,

Make sure that the Principal knows about Ernie Ball and the BSA, as well as how the BSA treats some school districts. http://www.infoworld.com/articles/hn/xml/02/11/27/021127hner... http://www.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/2001/03/05/daily2...

After all, to the principal BSA probably means Boy Scouts of America. Tell the principal not to be scared by this, just be informed. They do not want any unlicensed software on the school's machines, thats all. You don't want any software piracy, and there is an easy way to make sure all software they run is licensed.

Show the principal how each version of GNU/Linux is licensed and the license allows the school district to make copies. As many copies as they want! All upgrades and patches will always be free and licensed as well.

Show the principal that federal agencies like NASA, the NSA and the FBI use GNU/Linux, so it is ok for government bodies to use it.

Be positive and informative.

You are doing a good thing.

p.s. I.ve been playing with pclinuxos. Pretty nice for an rpm based distro.

Looks like you've been reading my mind. Pretty short read, huh?

For the sake of brevity, a practice I rarely practice...I did have a copy of Mr. Stallman's document when we met and while I am sure he will not read it in its full glory, The school admin is aware of his options with the GPL AND pitfalls of any meeting with the BSA. Tricky business talking about piracy to someone without implying that they are in the practice of it. ahem...

As far as other entities who utilize Linux, I added the friggin' pentagon and Wall Street. Wall Street got his attention for he fully understood the security implications. I think mentioning security and the pentagon in the same breath is illegal.

while PCLOS is rpm-based, it uses apt/synaptic for package management and I have never had a problem...ever. The only difference I am seeing is the richness of the debian repositories, but PCLOS has over 4000 apps to choose from so if you can't find what you want in that...well, I dun know what to say. I run a business on this "pre-release" software not to mention the computers at L4L. We're pretty happy with it, I hope you find as much pleasure using it as we have...geared for the new user mostly, it just works better. I like the fact that the streaming works out of the box...gets old hand installing the mplayer plugins.

Better yet, The Principal needs to know about Detroit a school. May be he will be more at ease since it is also a school. http://software.newsforge.com/software/05/05/18/1944227.shtm...
