I sent a link to this article to Jim Gleason, organizer of the first "Linux Beer Hike" . Here is Jim's response: It's all true and not a spoof. In 1998 we brewed the first open source beer. I bought a birthday present for my Linux mentor in Berkeley California - for $100 you could brew your own beer in this brewing company's kitchen. He created the label "open source beer" and gave it to John maddog Hall from DEC... the godfather of Linux Torvalds' first child, who gave Torvalds an alpha machine to port Linux.
