Linux is still growing fast, these clowns've just seen a molehill on their graph (of surveys filled in by people who think in terms of dollars and not deployments) and turned it into a headline mountain. I presume that if Linux hit 100% market-share anywhere, they'd also report that "as hitting a wall". Key phrase from the article: "These data should ease concerns among Microsoft investors about the impact of Linux on Windows in the server market". |

Actually they study "workloads" not dollars. Otherwise I agree with you: the numbers are percentages of corps asked. So, how do they handle a company going out of business? Not answering? Everybody doing these surveys knows that you may be happy if you get as much as 50% response. How to do statistics on that is a Good Question. So, is that the new Microsoft line: talk friendly and spread evil rumors based on questionable stats? |

Other variables to consider. 1. Windows is a ONE service per platform... platform. Add something new, buy a new machine. 2. Fewer forced upgrades with free software (in fact it can be zero). With Windows... eventually there comes a day when you HAVE to ditch it... and often times the cost warrants collateral purchases of additional hardware and software licenses. 3. Licenses.... hard to track the purchases of client licenses when none are required! Studies like this completely wrong because they are all based on bad assumptions that Linux == Windows. It doesn't. Simply put... Linux adoption slows because Linux does more for less. Linux can be responsible for a plethora of server consolidation efforts. I know I replace 3-5 Windows servers with ONE Linux platform routinely... I"m not alone. |

Hey, didn't Windows desktop adoption "stall" in the US about 8 years ago? I mean, it's not like the percentage (95%) has gone up any time recently... |
