I would've expected a bit more clue from lxer. Any half glance would've uncovered the shallowness of this press release. I programmed the ability for people to browse the pending queue and negatively vote for stories BEFORE they appear. You can be a part of the process, the solution, rather than simply complaining. Dave |

I don't understand your comments, neither do I understand your comments in the vote. Perhaps you could enlighten us? One question: You say that this is nothing new because Via has shared their source with a chosen few in the past. How is making it available to everybody the same as showing a chosen few? |

libv: I have seen your comment on the vote, which is a bit more enlightening than your comment here. However, I have seen a bit more detailed posting on the lwn.net site, where none of the comments seem to be quite so critical. Indeed many were positive. http://lwn.net/Articles/131777/ You may not like VIA, however, any move by a chip manufacturer to be a bit more open is a net gain. So they try to take a bit too much credit, I would allow them to prance and preen a bit if there is movement towards more open drivers. |

Update: again from lwn.net in a letter to the editor a critique seems to lend credence to your disputing the value of VIA's contribution: http://lwn.net/Articles/130870/ I am not certain that this portion is available to non-subscribers, hence, a few choice quotes: "It is also worth noting that the "VIA Open Source" package still relies on a proprietary binary library to provide MPEG acceleration on their hardware. This library provides a completely non-standard API that applications must work to implement MPEG support. ...", which is contrasted with open source (free?) groups' approach. And: "... therfore, a shame that VIA decided to make this grandiose eye catching announcement, rather than simply getting involved in the existing open source communities and simply helping and contributing ...". libv: I guess you were right, however, I wished you had expressed your thoughts on the topic a bit more clearly for those like myself that knew themselves not to be that well informed. |
