I hear many people out there dropping Mandrake from their boxes! Uninstall buttons worldwide just went on overdrive!

Mandriva? Sounds like a disease that you get in your mouth if you chew too hard. "Yes...I'm afraid that you have Mandriva. You can first expect slobbering and drooling in the next few weeks followed by full blown AIDS in a matter of a few months along with the odd inclination to uninstall things"

"Yep...I've got Mandriva. Holy crap! It really hurts!"

Not too mention that if you split it up and do New York slang on it...it sounds really, really, really, homo-erotic:

man-driva

man - a human male driva - someone who 'drives' something

ew?

Of course, it could be pronounced - dr-ee-v-ah in which case everything I just said would be for nil. But it is fun to poke fun at. I just think this is a horrible name...they could have done something completely different and probably appealed to more people than what this is going to appeal to.

When Sperry/UNIVAC and Burroughs merged in the late 80's, they held a naming contest. A Burroughs FE won with his submission that we know well: UNISYS.

Well, since _unification_ of two very different companies and architectures was the goal, the name made a great deal of sense ... and didn't sound all that bad, either.

Simply trying to meld two different NAMES together, however (as this appears to be) ... why does "Mandriva" remind me of "drivel"??

Oh well, maybe it WILL fly with their customers. So, what are the respective company's logos? THAT could be interesting as well!!

Is/was Connectiva Brazilian? French-Portugese-Spanish (for the rest of Latin America)? Thinking words and word meanings that could have a broad appeal...

Oh well, it wasn't up to us...

Good luck, guys! Hope you don't have to do this over again!

ConDrake would have been good or maybe Draketiva. Actually it all sounds like a lot of crap. Why change at all?

The chose Mandriva because all of the other stupid names were taken.

BTW - is anyone even -interested- in coming up with -better- alternatives??? :-)

I liked the Mandrake Tux Wizard .. but I thought they had to drop him because some other entity had first claim ..

Either way, considering the Latin American market, I hope this venture succeeds .. whatever they call themselves!

Maybe "Mandriva" sounds great down there!! ??

The Cooker list tried hard for Mantiva as an alternative. My own least-unfavourite was Draktiva.

devnet can take comfort in knowing that his reaction was predicted pretty much to the letter by the Cooker denizens.

This is one of those times when they should have chosen a completely unrelated name that sounded cool, and got on with it, I think.

How about the Uranus distribution?

I suppose you're all native English... All you're arguments against Mandriva make no sense when you're native French or Spanish/ Portuguese (For example the Man + drive argument).

So, I think, as an European, it's my turn to research a bit. Here we go... (Note: I don't speak portugeuse or spanish by the way... Just using some proprietary translation program)

"Mandria" (Spanish) means Weakling. "Driada" (Spanish) means wood nymph. So a Mandriva is a kind of weak wood nymph. "Mandrill" (French): same in English. "Va" (French): go So Mandriva is something like go and make a lot of noise and some holes in the ground. arquiMANDRITA (Brazil Protuguese) is the superior of a monastery in the Greek Church, so mandrita has something to do with believe and Greek people. Maybe they believe Greek people are going to use it?

Anyway, I first supposed the name was only stupid in English, but this proves that might not be the case.

Thank goodness I'm not the only person with a poor view on the new naming!! So bad I found it that I felt to compelled to write to Mandrake (whatever) within minutes! Everyone on this bored seems to have reached the same views on it as me - so glad to know it's not just my twisted mind finding Mandriva a poor name (drivel and gay porn star are a couple images which come to mind when I hear the name. Please please is there any named address where the powers that be can reverse the decision?

Now I'm not going to uninstall based on a name, I've tried others and still find myself missing Mandrake's sickeningly easy to use system, but I might well consider leaving MandrakeLinux 10.1 on, rather then upgrading to Mandrivel when it's available - which is a shame, as I like being a bit of version junkie :-)

Regards, Ryan
