This just in.... Yahoo issued another statement earlier today saying that they will be glad to render webpages in strict NON HTML 4.01 compliance. "We really don't care for web standards and would rather everyone just use the swiss cheese like Internet Explorer when looking at our websites. Afterall, we build them in frontpage anyway." By adhering to strict HTML 4.01 compliance, yahoo would open up their page for EVERYONE'S viewing pleasure, appealing to a wider audience. "That's just something we don't want to do," said Yahoo when asked about the standard. "We just want our page to be chock full of HTML 4.01 Validation errors and we want it to stay that way! By keeping our pages 'optimised' for IE, we'll get rid of those pesky open source zealots away from our site and on others where they belong!" The portal giant may just get its wish. According to current W3C validation, their webpage is full of more than 260 errors! http://validator.w3.org/check?uri=http://yahoo.com The new error tactic has most analysts on edge and confused. Why would Yahoo elect to limit the number of people that can render their homepage correctly? One can only speculate that they are planning on launching a major marketing ploy...perhaps, "Hey, we're #2...and that ain't bad" We'll follow this story closely as it develops. devnet |

I am simply not a big user of Yahoo, however, their pages seem to work with either Mozilla suite 1.7.5 (and earlier) as well as Firefox. Granted I do not take full advantage of their offerings, but even in some limited uses, e.g. looking up business phone numbers I had found an indirect route via Google more reliable. Nonetheless, I just found their (Yahoo) maps more reliable than Mapquest (and also Googlemaps where the latter could not even find the location even after giving the proper spelling). Should MS in their infinite wisdom decide to innovate such that Yahoo becomes impossible to use for my ilk, they will lose immediately at least two members of my family, perhaps more. Yahoo was an early user of Linux for their servers, so this is like biting the hand that fed them. Perhaps they will upgrade to Windows Servers, so that more traffic can be permanently diverted to more deserving sites (ha Portals up ...). |
