Patent loving proprietary companies keep trying to subvert standards groups, but fortunately Open-source and free-software advocates are paying attention. I would be tempted to say "OASIS just doesn't get it", but they understand all too well what they are trying to do.... lock out free software. OASIS CEO Patrick Gannon: "in almost all cases, that results in a royalty-free license for that work." Sorry, but *almost all* is not good enough. "Defenders of RAND-tolerant standards policies say standards suffer from exclusion of royalty-bearing technologies." Fine, I prefer to suffer with a royalty-free standard rather that suffer with one that can't be implemented by F/OSS. Let's just call this what it is: just another battle in the war with proprietary software. |
