From the story: > The move is intended to make Sun's Solaris a stronger competitor to Linux and Windows.

The TRUTH is that Sun has now PARTNERED with Microsoft to work TOGETHER toward the elimination of Linux in the enterprise (they have no problem with it remaining as a hobbiest or even techie-home soln).

However, Sun is planning their Windows attack (just as Windows is planning their Sun attack). This is a temporary marriage of two sworn enemies to fight against something they see as a bigger threat to their marketshare.

Sun will make NO moves against Windows for several years... in fact, their emphasis will be "Sun and Microsoft together.. for the sake of the enterprise".

As I've mentioned earlier, Sun is playing the Linux game to provide a SHORT TERM answer for those wanting Linux... this way Sun owns Linux and can migrate them to Solaris for the LONG TERM.

Sun's biggest challenge will be in remaking their solns channels... esp. on sales of Sun equipment. The new Opteron push does not provide the grotesquely huge margins that were afforded by the mysterious SPARC architecture. If you remember when Apple nuke their active and quite viable clone markets... something similar may happen here. Margins are low, therefore the one who gets the most volume is very important. Therefore.... Sun will take charge and BE the sole supplier (practically) of Sun solns (they'll pattern themselves like Dell/HP's x86 style). Sun's soln channels will be forced to being just software (but obviously less emphasis on the OS infrastructure and more on layered solns).

Another prediction for you: SPARC dead in less than two years (possible everyone will see the end game by end of 2005)
