For what its worth here my thoughts on the matter.

I HATE DOT FILES. (sorry, needed to get that out...)

I know tools like ls hide files starting with a dot, but I still know they are there messing up my home dir.

ls -ld .* | wc -l 249

nearly 250 files or dirs messing up my home dir. I would much rather have one dir (eg ~/etc/kde) and have programmes put their stuff there.

Anything I write will use ~/etc// I know this is not standard, and will probably annoy others for that. It also conflicts with the articles use.

On a more calmer note... In some networks I been on, there isn't just one OS so instead of ~/bin, ~/lib, etc I have ~/usr.`uname -s`/bin (using bash ``) eg ~/usr.Linux/bin ~/usr.Linux/lib

my normal files are sorted into grouped dirs, rarely rooted at ~/ eg ~/html/public/ instead of ~/public_html, where do i put non public stuff? or ~/c/gtk/project/incarnation/ a gtk app thats written in c (not useful for bigger projects i know)
