As far as I can see Solaris going somewhat Open Source is a very significant step. Not sure if SUN will be successful but the announcement leaves MS at the only major totally closed source OS. (Assuming AIX , HPUX etc will slowly vanish) More importantly this introduces an educational buffer into the decision making process. Sure SUN can continue to harp on the lack of legal protection but inevitably the debate will drift toward the real issue being: Why they did it and what benefits arises from this. The superior development model and the empowerment issues will taken center stage notably if SUN is successful benefiting Linux in the long run at MS' expense. |
