Bootable games on Linux

At the linuxshow last week there was a discussion about linux games. Apparently some of the major players are looking into offering their games on a bootable, highly optimized Linux liveCD.

I guess they could get access to the ATI and Nvidia source code, tweak the drivers to suit their particular needs thereby overcoming the problem chip makers have with publishing the source code. This to me sounds real interesting and could make the PC much more console like and don't forget most LiveCDs these days has a "Install to disk" feature. Can anyone corroborate this? The info allegedly came from remarks by designers inside a major game company.
