I had to laugh at this article. So, Sun's new leaf started early this year by calling Red Hat a proprietary software company. Even funnier is the fact that Sun wants people to run their Linux applications under Solaris? In their words it's, ""Why spend all of the money, when you can get Solaris to run your Linux apps..." I fell out of my chair, then got up to see the "...much better and lower cost?" Oh, I question whether or not running any thing Linux under or on Sun is cheaper. Another slap at Red Hat by saying, "Just send them a big check and away you go.", as if Sun is asking for lower prices than Red Hat when it comes to the Enterprise. When the Sun finally sets, I'll be smiling.

J.S. We welcome the Linux community.

C.C. So you are FOR running Linux.

J.S. Absolutely.. we are 100% for running Linux applications on Solaris 10!

C.C. I'm talking about the Linux operating system, not just applications that run on it.

J.S. We understand completely. Linux is Unix. Unix is Linux. We are all the same thing. You can run your Linux applications on the Linux operating system or you can run them on the vastly superior, cheaper and more stable Solaris operating system.

C.C. But Linux is available on more platforms than just x86 and SPARC.

J.S. Nobody runs Linux applications except on SPARC and the vastly inferior x86 platform.

C.C. Uh... ok... I don't think so.

J.S. That's the problem. Red Hat users don't think. They have zero level IQ's.

C.C. I don't work for Red Hat.

J.S. But you all want to work for them. Sheesh... all you think about is Red Hat. If only you knew the joys of working for Sun, then you'd want to work for Sun!

C.C. Didn't Sun lay off thousands of people over the past couple of years?

J.S. Only dead weight folks running Red Hat on their desktops. We're now down to the folks who have never even seen GNU/Linux running on a desktop. Folks with age and maturity with those good old ideas and ways that made Solaris great! Just wait until you see the new CDE desktop... if you thought the last one was the greatest environment, just wait!! Sun is the source of great software innovation!

C.C. Like TLI technology. The socket layer was such a poor performer that you had to put native sockets back into Solaris.

J.S. It was those dead weight Red Hat supporters. Only Linux coders could have thought up of something so stupid.

C.C. Not like the elegant streamlined AT&T code found in Solaris.

J.S. Exactly!! Just wait until you see it. And we want to make sure that EVERY Linux user sees it!!

C.C. Is it that important for every Linux user to see it?

J.S. Well, our goal is just the core kernel developers, and mainly the core programmers at Red Hat.

C.C. But you think they are stupid, are you sure you want them to see your source code?

J.S. Absolutely. We REALLY need them to see the source code.

C.C. What do you hope to get out of it?

J.S. The end of Red Hat and the beginning of a better safer Unix universe.

C.C. ...where all code is under the GPL.

J.S. Under it, on top of it... whatever it takes!! GO LINUX! GO SUN! IT'S ALL THE SAME THING!!

cjcox, how about writing an interview with Bill Gates? This one had torrential tears flowing from my eyes ...

Ok.. this one I wrote shortly after Zander's departure... shows Sun's cluelessness with regards to open source and Linux. I'll admit, they're much more knowledgeable today... but back then.. it was hilarious!!

A Dream of an Interview with Scott McNealy

It was a dream... I think... it's so hazy now, it's hard to remember it all. It seemed so real.

Chris: This is a real pleasure, I have always wanted to speak with you.

Scott: Thanks. Who are you?

Chris: I'm just a dream... So tell me about your new Linux initiative?

Scott: Well, as you know, we're a long time supporter of Linux... I mean GNU/Linux and the whole Open GNU Free Source movement.

Chris: But this is a fairly recent change in direction, isn't it?

Scott: Absolutely not. If you look into this, you'll see that we've been doing Unix as long, if not longer than our competition. We've had that extra CD thing in our distribution .. I mean, like forever dude!

Chris: But it wasn't supported, correct?

Scott: What?! Of course it was supported. Supported by the Linux Open Source Free Software Foundation folks. What a great bunch of guys. Really smart and probably the best programmers I know personally.

Chris: We're talking there about Solaris Unix and not Linux though?

Scott: We're talking about Sun ONE, and a vision of unity.

Chris: But... that's for Unix.. not Linux??

Scott: Excactly. I mean if you're going to use GNU/Linux, you can easily moved to real Unix.

Chris: So... Linux isn't real??

Scott: Make no mistake, Linux is a Quality product, and I mean that. It has Quality with a capital 'Q'... but Solaris has Big League Enhanced Quality, that most enterprises need.

Chris: Sounds like a baseball team.

Scott: I know you meant that to be funny, but you must understand that all of this is under one team, one focused vision and we call that Sun ONE.

Chris: Isn't iPlanet the key part of Sun ONE?

Scott: The old iPlanet technology has been replaced with several tightly integrated pieces of technology which comprise Sun ONE which will give enterprises the tools required to do business around the world today.

Chris: Don't you give Sun ONE away?

Scott: No. It has value, we certainly do not give it away for free.

Chris: So free stuff really does not have value?

Scott: Oh... well when talking about GNU/Linux and the Free GNU Open software movement, certainly there is Quality and I mean that with a capital 'Q'. But certainly Big League Enhanced Quality products, like the entire suite of products that are part of Sun ONE can't be free.

Chris: Why not?

Scott: We've got billions of dollars of enhanced high quality code and support behind Sun ONE. If we gave it away, we would be devaluating its worth.

Chris:But I understand that Solaris 9 comes with Sun ONE Application Server and Sun ONE Directory Server, both of which were formally iPlanet product offerings... and those come FREE??

Scott: Yes! Free, like GNU/Linux. We're totally behind the whole Free Software GNU liberty thing. Solaris is too and so is Sun ONE.

Chris: So it's free?

Scott: No, of course not. Sun ONE has value to the enterprise, it has to have a price tag.

Chris: But not the Application Server and Directory Server?

Scott: Those pieces come with Solaris 9, which supports the whole GNU/Linux Freedom Software movement... Yes, indeed they are very free, like GNU/Linux, have you tried Solaris yet?

Chris: Many times and I still have to use it, even today.

Chris: What happened to Ed Zander? Wasn't he the Linux czar at Sun?

Scott: First off, Mr. Zander is what held our Linux strategy back. He was so focused on becoming CEO, that he was not doing his job effetively. He didn't see the Sun ONE vision at all. The good news is that he decided on his own, with absolutely no guidance from us, to retire. Second, if you look carefully, you'll see that Ed Zander made many disparaging remarks about Linux, we couldn't send out a mixed message, we need a very focused message with regards to GNU/Linux and our other Free Open Source GNU stuff.

Chris: So, it was Ed's fault?

Scott: No... not his fault, he was just confused. But he is gone now and we are now on track to deliver a unified Sun ONE vision again.

Chris: So... talk to me about the SPARC hardware future.

Scott: We have no plans to give that away.

Chris: Understood.

Scott: We are working on the next generation SPARC which will use a very unique multi-processor on chip technique that will propel us ahead of all other competitors.

Chris: Multi-processor on die like the PowerPC chip?

Scott: No. This is SPARC, not the PowerPC.

Chris: But the technique is the same?

Scott: Certainly not. We have not released our multi-processor on die SPARC yet, it certainly does not exist today.

Chris: Let's move on... so this will allow you to match the price/performance ratios being offered by IBM?

Scott: That's a leading question... it implies that we're behind them in some way... Sun is a leader, an innovator and of course, the life long friend of all Open ... as in beer ... (wink, wink) GNU Raymond Software. Have you ever met Eric? I'm a big emacs fan.

Chris: Uh.. yes, I've met Eric, if you mean Eric Raymod... and emacs is ok, but that's RMS...

Scott: Yessir! You've got it, you're starting to see the whole Sun ONE picture now... we've got EMS, RMS while still preserving things like SCCS for our legacy enterprise users.

Chris: I do think I'm getting a clearer picture now.

Scott: Great! Here is a free Sun ONE CD for you, I've got a whole trunk full of these, pass them out to your friends.

Chris: That's a whole trunk load of value I guess (laughing). For Solaris only, I suppose.

Scott: Yes... but Solaris is free.

Chris: ..because it has value!

Scott: Exactly, but only on SPARC.

Chris: Only has value on SPARC?

Scott: Only free on SPARC, we will be offering it on Intel again, since we never really left (really).

Chris: So I can get Solaris 9 for Intel?

Scott: Of course. It is an option with the LX-50.

Chris: Which means it will cost me quite a bit to get it.

Scott: No... it is free, but the LX-50 does cost a bit.

Chris: Well, I can tell that you are pretty much thru...

Scott: (laughing) Yes, I am. But I've enjoyed discussing the benefits of truly Open Freeware and the whole community thing. Have fun hacking GNU Openware!

The dream ended as abruptly as it began. And many new thoughts went through my head. But first I need to call my broker, with inside information like this, I need to act fast!
