SNMP is a good thing as long as you are careful with it (can be a big security problem if you don't know what you are doing with it). It is very very useful though. I even created an SNMP server package for my LinkSys wireless router: http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net/files/ipkg/ It is very easy to program client side utilities to use the information you can reap from the SNMP service. Or there are many utilities out there already written: http://voidmain.is-a-geek.net/cacti/graph_view.php?action=tr... At work we have literally thousands upon thousands of SNMP enabled devices and we get much information ranging from performance to security via SNMP. With net-snmp you can even create your own OIDs and tie them to scripts so the possibilities are endless. This message was edited Aug 11, 2004 9:09 AM |
