Lately, there has been a lot of attention in the industry on the current (and future) virtualization products from VMware and Microsoft. However, the latest Linux distributions from Red Hat and SUSE now also include full range of virtualization capabilities based on the Xen hypervisor. How do they compare with VMware and Microsoft's offerings?

The analyst firm Ideas International has perform a detailed technical comparison of the virtualization functions in RHEL 5, SLES 10, VMware Infrastructure 3, and MS Virtual Server, ranking these systems based on the quality of 40 different functional details related to performance & scalability, availability, storage integration, manageability, and deployment considerations such as price and compatibility. The results of the evaluation can be reviewed online through a new and unique collaborative web-based interface, which allows visitors to weight the importance of different functions to arrive at a customized ranking of these VM platforms reflecting their needs. It is also possible for users to contribute their own ratings of individual functions, should they choose to agree or disagree with the "expert" analysis of IDEAS analysts.
