LXer Announcement: 22-Sep-2006

For the past couple of months, LXer has been beta testing a new look aimed at improving the site's appearance and usability. The time has come to launch.

LXer is known for its live newswire, its hard-hitting editorials, and its lively community. It is also known for its somewhat spartan appearance. A young college student recently pitched in to help LXer improve its image - literally.

Sarah Vessels, a student of the University of Kentucky, kept the basic layout, but implemented standards-compliant HTML and CSS. The right side bar has been widened somewhat, and new colors give the site a modern look and feel. Additionally, the search box has been moved to the top, right corner of the site, eliminating the need to scroll for it. She also worked to improve readability for the visually impaired.

LXer has been running the new look in beta mode for about two months, and is now ready to launch the new look. Comments from the beta testers have been very positive. The switchover will take place at midnight, US Central Time, on Sunday, 24 Sep 2006. Europe and Africa will wake up shortly after to a brand new LXer front page.

Launching the new look is just one step LXer is taking as we move forward with our growing global community of readers. LXer readers should begin seeing other new features implemented in the coming weeks and months, as well as a push toward increasing our global audience. The long-awaited database of vendors offering GNU/Linux is being taken up next. Stay tuned!
