Is Linux Suffering From Mono?

Is Mono an affliction that should be eradicated or a choice that should be respected? Does its inclusion in a distro reek of obeisance to Microsoft, or should the threat of a Microsoft claim to "ownership" be considered irrelevant to true FOSS believers?
